Treatment Review // Microdermabrasion

For those wanting to delve into the world of facials but not sure where to start, a  Microderm is just the right thing. The non-chemical, non-invasive procedure uses a spray of micro-crystals to remove the outer layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveal younger, healthier-looking skin… heaven!

I’d never have jumped on the skin treatments bandwagon if it wasn’t for a Neoskin gift voucher I received from work colleagues, and for that I am eternally grateful! The girls recommended a Microderm with a side of Oxy-mist (a divine, light mist of vitamin E infused oxygen sprayed lightly over the skin to create suppleness) and I’ve never looked back.

Rather than a typical ‘relaxing’ facial, Microderms could be likened to a soft sandpaper working to give perfect exfoliation. As lovely as a smooth facial is, I prefer the texture of a Microderm and feeling it get to work immediately. After sitting back to let the professional work her magic for about 45 minutes, the result is smooth, supple skin that looks and feels as if new life has been breathed back into it. The real ‘glow’ develops over 24 hours so stay tuned for the next-day compliments.

Additionally… When you visit a spa for the first time (in my case, Neoskin), the complimentary consultation prior to first treatment to determine your skin type and concerns is life changing. A skincare professional spent about 15 minutes examining my skin under a bright light and magnified lens to flag dry areas, recommended products and helped develop the custom skincare treatment I still swear by today. At $110, I’d highly recommended a Microderm perhaps twice a year for a gorgeous skin boost.

After a particularly bad couple of skin weeks, I decided that enough was enough and I needed to take matters into my own hands – or more so, into the capable hands of the lovely Jemma at Neoskin (at J’s recommendation). Jemma advised me that Microderms are not for everyone and only after a comprehensive skin assessment did she give me the go-ahead. I should mention here that I have some congestion in my skin and had been suffering from the usual nasties associated (pimples, blackheads, acne spots, etc – sigh!).

As mentioned above, Microderms help clear pores and offers a generous exfoliation of the skin. I coupled my treatment with a peel to aid my congestion, which worked wonders as the exfoliation meant that the effects were almost immediate. As a Microderm newbie, Jemma talked me through the entire procedure, which made all the difference when she was wielding the device over my face.

Now onto the results: my skin felt baby soft and thankfully I didn’t have plans for that evening so all of the products could work their magic well into the night. Those pesky red marks that hang around for weeks after a pimple were reduced down to almost nothing. I noticed a difference in my skin literally overnight, and have been suggesting a series of treatments to anyone who is complaining about their skin lately – and so far no one has been disappointed ! I would definitely recommend a treatment (or few) depending of skin needs and also for the helpful advice of a great skin doc – thanks Jemma (stay tuned for our current skincare regimes).
